Who am I now?Finding your identity when life shifts overnight.
Life Coach Zephila Fawn in a moment of calm reflection!
One morning you wake up and the life you recognized is gone. Maybe the career that defined you for fifteen years ended with a single conversation. Maybe the kids started school and the motherhood identity you built your days around suddenly has empty hours in it. Maybe a relationship ended and you're left looking in the mirror at someone you're not quite sure you know anymore.
The question that surfaces in all of it is the same one: who am I now?
Here's what nobody tells you. That question isn't a sign that something is wrong with you. It's a sign that something is ready to be rebuilt.
THE IDENTITY WE NEVER CHOSE
Most of us assembled our identities without realizing we were doing it. Daughter. Employee. Wife. Friend. The organized one. The strong one. The one who handles it.
We stacked these roles like bricks until they formed the walls of a house we lived in comfortably. And then life shifts (because life always shifts) and one of those bricks gets pulled out, and suddenly we can see through the wall. It's disorienting. Sometimes it's devastating.
But here's the reframe that changed everything for me and for the women I coach: those roles were never actually you. They were things you did. You were the constant underneath them the entire time.
GRIEVING WHO YOU WERE IS PART OF THE WORK
I want to give you permission for something: you're allowed to mourn your old self. So many women rush past the grief because it feels dramatic, or ungrateful, or like admitting failure. It isn't.
When I went through my own season of upheaval, I spent weeks trying to power through with positivity. It didn't work. What worked was finally saying out loud: I miss her. I miss who I was, and I don't know who I'm becoming.
That admission wasn't the end of anything. It was the beginning of everything. You can't build a new identity on top of denial. You can only build it on honesty.
THREE QUESTIONS TO START REBUILDING
When you're ready (and only when you're ready), here's where I have my clients start. Sit with a journal and answer these:
1. What parts of my old life do I genuinely miss, and what parts was I only performing?
2. What have I always wanted to try but never had room for?
3. If nobody was watching, and nobody would judge, who would I be tomorrow?
The answers don't arrive all at once. They arrive like a photograph developing, slowly gaining contrast. Your only job is to keep asking.
YOU ARE NOT BEHIND SCHEDULE
If there's one thing I want you to hear, it's this: there is no deadline for becoming yourself. Transition isn't a detour from your life. It is your life, doing what lives do: changing.
The women I work with usually come to me believing they're broken. They leave realizing they were just under construction. There's a difference, and it matters.
So if you're in the middle of it right now, asking who am I now at 2 a.m., I see you. And I promise: the woman on the other side of this is not someone you've lost. She's someone you haven't met yet.
YOUR TRANSFORMATIONAL JOURNEY STARTS HERE
If this season has you questioning everything, you don't have to navigate it alone. I work with women who are ready to stop bracing against change and start building from it. Reach out for a conversation, and let's find out who you're becoming, together.
